Avantis Estate

GREECE

Avantis is the ancient name for Evia where this winery is found in the Central Greece wine making zone. The first harvest here was back in 1993. Winemaker Apostolos Mountrichas, a student of law and economics and well learnt in the family’s past immersed in viticulture was inspired by a trip to Bordeaux in France. This fuelled his passion for tending vine and he went on to study Oenology Apostolos’s wife Lenga has also studied viticulture in Athens and holds qualifications in the world renowned WSET academic studies to diploma level and has created a cosmetic line made from grapes for the estate.

The vineyards lying at between 250 and 500m above sea level consist of 20 hectares and are influenced by the cool air descending from Mount Dirfi which is 1743m above sea level. Winters are cool, summers are hot and Autumns are dry, making conditions perfect for an even slow ripening for the grapes. The soil composition is quite diverse and you can find clay, sand, a mixture of both and gravel.

100 % Viogniers and Gewurtztraminers give this winery its uniqueness in the region and has shown to be masterful in blending also. White blends in the portfolio include a Viognier Assyrtiko marriage and an alliance between the Malagouzia and Chardonnay varieties. Reds include the Vradiano Merlot blend as well as a GSM blend but the cream of the crop here are the Mavrokoudoura, Syrah Viognier harmony and straight Syrah wines with many different clones of the Syrah variety being planted which no doubt coined the Apostle’s nickname, the Syrah Master.

Douloufakis Winery

GREECE

The winery can be found at the Crete Island started its history by Dimitrios Douloufakis in 1930. In 1960 the winery passed to Dimitrio’s son George and later to grandson Nikos until today.

Today the winery continues the reformation of privately owned vineyards that the father had started. He develops single-varietal vineyards from indigenous Cretan varieties, such as Liatiko, but also plants international varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauv. and Chardonnay. He introduces modern cultivation techniques by modifying some of the traditional ones, like in pruning and altering the harvesting dates.

Certified organic farming methods are applied on the privately owned vineyards, supervised by a competent organization. Five years later, that is in 2006, five of Douloufakis labels will be certified as organic farming products.

The winery keeps developing, implementing creative ideas, and using state-of-the-art equipment. New planting and reforming of vineyards continues to date, since the quality of the wine is determined there. The fourth generation is expected to carry on the family tradition.

Gavalas Winery

GREECE

Gavalas family winery, one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, lies in the traditional village of Megalochori. This stone building used to be an old canava-winery, following the traditional architecture of the ancient Thira.

With respect to the local culture they have retained all the original areas of the winery, such as cellars, grape stomping rooms and old entrances.

Meanwhile they created a modern section with high tech equipment in order to produce high quality wines. The purpose of Gavalas family is to highlight the characteristics of Santorini’s “terroir”. The fourth-generation winemaker is George Gavalas and the fifth is his son, Vagelis. With proper respect to the local varieties, the winery is focused on limited production bottling.

Gavalas winery vinifies the most vibrant variety in Greece, Assyrtiko, as well as Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano.

In order to show the richness of the land, it is the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the indigenous rare varieties of Katsano and Voudomato.

Kikones Winery

GREECE

Domaine Kikones organically cultivated vineyards are located in Maronia, Thrace and cover a surface of 10ha in total. The climate in the region is very mild, affected by the Thracian Sea breeze and the Ismaros mountain. The soil is red clay loam enriched with large amounts of silicon dioxide stones (Quartz). The red color of the soil is due to high quantities of iron integrated which brings spiciness to the wines produced from the region. The cool winds coming from the Rodopi mountains in the North are smoothened by the sea breeze which makes the area unique for cultivating vineyards and produce high quality grapes, the raw material for great wines. This is something the ancient Greeks valued and one of the main reasons why Maronia was one of the first wine regions in Europe during antiquity. The winemaking philosophy is the combination of the most appropriate techniques adjusted to the special characteristics of the grapes produced in Maronia, Thrace. The know-how about the vineyard management is adopted from Australia, the hygiene and technology from Bordeaux and the vinification from Burgundy. The harmonious combination of these methods paired with the best terroir possible, create the unique characteristics of the Thracian winemaking.

Moraitis Winery

GREECE

The Moraitis winery was originally established in 1910 by Manolis Moraitis, who was cultivating his own vines and exported his wine via his ship. The winery passed down to his grandson, then his great grandson Theodore, who is now the 4th generation at the helm of the estate and has become a renowned winemaker in his own right. The winery is located on the Cyclades island of Paros by the beach of Agioi Anargyroi. The vineyards are all over the island and are usually subject to dry conditions year round.

Moraitis currently has 25 hectares of vineyards planted with indigenous varieties. Much of the islands soil is poor and sandy, and offers good drainage resulting in highly concentrated wines Theodore is making top Rose wine here using the Aidani Mavro grape variety that is only found on Paros, in the Cycladic islands and on Crete. It is adapted to the hot and dry climate of the islands and copes well with water stress. Other grapes grown include the Malagousia and Monemvasia whites, with the latter being blended with the red Mandilaria to produce a wine reminiscent of a fine Northern Rhône.

Poultsidis Winery

GREECE

Name of winemaker studied the science of soil management and crop production which took him all over Greece and into his vineyards and eventually ignited a passion for cultivating the vine. Name of winemaker nurtured his first vineyard in 1998 in a tiny half a hectare plot in Nees Karyes, Larissa, on clay limestone slopes at an altitude above sea level of between 140 and 160m.

The microclimate of the area is characterized by heavy rainfall and low temperatures in winter, while in spring and summer there are high temperatures and prolonged drought, which helps implement organic cultivation methods in the vineyards. Since 2006, viticulture has been certified Organic and Vegan. Today at Poultsidis there are over 80 hectares under vine.

Poultsidis Winery has a very diverse portfolio and is making wines that are dry, sweet or sparkling as well as including the international varieties and the indigenous.

Zacharias Distillery

GREECE

Nikolaos Zacharias was employed by Lake Copais Co. Ltd in 1937. This allowed him to acquire knowledge that he later put to use. In 1946 he founded his winery and later his son, Athanasios Zacharias, refurbished the premises. The winery was upgraded with modern technology equipment.

Nevertheless, Athanasios also had a passion for the art of distillation so in 1999 he established a modern distillery, the first in the region of Boeotia. This has successfully produced tsipouro since.

Memories have a way of lingering for years. They are passed down from one generation to the next and become part of the family history and family identity. Nikolaos, the grandfather, was the guide of the English commander. Every day he would take him to work to inspect the progress of the drainage works, and every day he watched the region change. This experience he related to his family.

The British engineers built their homes in the area and moved their families here. They built roads, started farms, gardens, fields, but they also built a small distillery that was lost along with the lake. Lost something is never lost when it has become a part of our existence; when it has become part of our life as we grew up.  These memories gave life to our distillery the “Lost Lake Distillery”, and together with our memories the nymph of the lake has also come alive!
